A word from the webkeeper

August 21, 2007

Dear friend of the Square,

Sandy Berger

Welcome CVS!

CVS is here at last. The new store opened Sunday August 19. It's large and bright, with a convenient rear entrance and a drive through prescription dropoff - pickup window. For more, including pictures, click here.

Patios are growing

Several restaurant dining patios around the Square look better than ever - enlarged, rebuilt, renovated. Look for a page of photos soon.

More free parking!

Parking meters are still all around the Square. (If not, all the spaces would be used by Rapid Transit riders and store employees.) But now they have a button you can press for 15 minutes of free parking. What a good (and long awaited) improvement. learn more

Shaker Square Citizen

This website salutes Donita Anderson, founder and manager of the North Union Farmers Market. Her work has brought a freshness and vitality to the Square. learn more

The Coral Company, probably including the three May move-ins, says that occupancy has risen to 85 percent from only 45 percent when they took over in September 2004. That's good for us all, though given the CVS delay and the recent departures, we think that number is a little "north" of the current occupancy rate.

Community pages

Our coverage of predatory lending, a major consumer protection issue, continues on our Predatory Lending page. And our Grinch List of all the Northern Ohio state legislators who voted to weaken the Anti-Predatory Lending bill, still gets lots of visitors.

Northeast corridor

In the center of the northeast quadrant, just west of what will be the new CVS location, is a new wide well-lit corridor from the Square to the north parking lot. It makes it easier for visitors to park free and get to the Square without having to walk to North Moreland.

Web site news

Our website is ranked #1 by all major search engines. Our traffic increases steadily. We now have more than 12,000 visitors a month!

For three years this website has had no income, yet it needs almost daily attention to keep it fresh and growing. Our first effort to make it self-sustaining is a small inobtrusive section for real estate advertising: Places to Live near Shaker Square.

We've also started a Sponsorship program and are glad to announce that the largest store on the Square - Dave's Supermarket - as our first website sponsor.

Doing this will allow our other pages to stay ad-free.

See you on the Square.

Arnie

On a sad personal note. Sandy, who often walked the Square with me and whose sweet face graced this page since its start, is gone. She died in her sleep on June 19, age 9 1/2, a very advanced age for a boxer. We'd been together more than seven years, ever since she was rescued in Sandusky (thus, the name Sandy).

Thanks for being one of the more than 12,000
persons who visit www.shakersquare.net each month.
